I just bought a new heatsink, a Thermaltake Volcano 7. Blue aluminum, has a copper plug. So today I installed it. The sink, came with a little black square of stuff on the bottom, I thought this was that thermal crap that is bad, so I scraped it off with a razor, and put some arctic 3 on there, rubbed it around with a gloved hand. Then I put a few dots of the stuff on the cpu core, and ran the razor over it, to smooth it out.
So I go to put the sink on, and I can't put the clip on the middle ledge thing. So I put it on the one nearest my northern chipset. It goes on pretty smoothly, and I bring it back upstairs. Plug it in, la de da, go into bios, to check the temp, and it is skyrocketing. With my old cooler, it was at 51C to 53C depending, and up to 55C on load and stuff. This was going to that in the bios, and going up to 60C before I shut it off immediately. Then I let it go past the bios for a few seconds, and it said 'boot disc failure, insert system disc'... ? ? ? ? ? ?
What the hell is going on. (I'm on my mom's computer)

I've had a similar problem and it turns out that the heatsink wasn't seated properly on the cpu. I know it may sound like something only a total newb would do but i have been using computers for about 17 years now and it happened to me so you might just want to check that the heatsink is flush with the cpu.

Yea i thought of that. I put the heatsink back on, and it seems to be working better now. But I downclocked the chip to 950, and now it runs at 50C. this is just so I can usse it ...
could i have a crappy fan? it's SUPPOSED to be a 48 CFM ys tech, but i dont know... ill try another fan I have to see if that works better, or resitting it AGAIN.
replacing heatsink =

It sounds like the heatsink/the seal between the heatsink and the CPU is bad. It is working to some extent because your chip didnt fry within seconds of power on.
I would re-seat the heatsink and try again.

The problem was that since it was a bigger heatsink, it wouldn't fit on my a7a board. There is a transistor int he way, so i attached it to the lug nearest the chipset. I guess I have to put it on the middle one? I don't know, I'm sending it back, and buying an ax-7 which fits on my baord, and works quite well.. this is becoming such a hassle  I better get better cooling.
