...yet he's a reasonable friend, and finding another drummer will take time...

the problem: he CANNOT play anything even vaguely tricky cover wise and says that "playing covers is impossible because that means I have to be as good as the pros".

THEN, when we make original material, he has one drum beat, which doesn't vary and has no fills or anything to lead to a change in tempo to lead to a chorus or bridge.

Should he stay or should he move his enormous fat ass?

Tell him that you need a better drummer and if he can't be bothered or isn't able to develop as a drummer he can't continue with you. If he wants give him time to show that he can improve his skills - you can already start looking for someone to replace him in case he fails to do this.

sounds to me like he's a pesimist... and a lazy one at that :) get him to get off his arse and put some work in!!!!! that's bollocks about being a pro in my opinion.

That's what I thought, too. He needs some motivation to work with his drumming skills and threatening to dump him might do the trick. If it doesn't work he is either too lazy or too talentless to continue with the band.
