my brother's everquest addiction

hey fellas, long time no see.

i have just been speaking to my mum, and it turns out that my brother has been lying about what he's been doing for the last year. he said he was going to university, he told us exam results etc, but it turns out that he did not go and all he did solidly for the last year was play everquest.

he lives in the same house as mum, and nobody even knew he wasn't going. he had a fake timetable in his head, he asked my mother to wake him up early a few days a week because he claimed to have early classes, he asked people to drop him off for his exams, he basically lived a total lie for the entire last year. 12 solid months of lying his fucking arse off just so he could play everquest.

i'm in the process of trying to find as much information as i can on everquest addictions, as lame as that sounds, and would really, reallly appreciate it if you guys could help me out with some research.

this is totally serious because this is an incredibly huge problem. he's now been playing for about 3 years, and doesn't seem to care about anything else, doesn't give a fuck about lying to his own family, just does not give a fuck about anything other than the game.

i'm quite sure that it will destroy his life, but my family and i need to know as much about the problem as possible. it's totally fucked up, i feel sick everytime i think of him doing this shit. it's like a full-blown drug that's taken over his life. he never, ever goes outside, hangs out with his mates (i think he's lost just about all of them), or anything anymore. he used to be really active, have a lot of mates, and play a lot of sports, not to mention being a really clever, likeable guy.

please don't anyone post and bullshit or i'll fly over and kill you.

thanks heaps,

I play EQ.  Its an huge scale online role playing game.  You level your character up, kill mobs(monsters), and get new equipment.  Its also one of the most addicting games out there.

Firstly, your brother is a loser, and needs serious help.  EQ is not a substitute for RL.  The easiest way to get him off is to pull the plug completely.  Cancel whatever payment plan he is using.  If hes paying for himself you got more serious issues.  If you want to be very tricky, figure out the message board for his guild(He might have it saved under favorites, etc.  if not watch what server he joins upon log in(Tallon Zek, Saryrn, etc - theres various servers with such names), and see if you can figure out what his guilds name is.  if his character's name is Pablo, with the surname Picasso, you will see Pablo Picasso <guild name>.  Search google for server name, guild name, and you should find it).  Figure out the guild leader by seeing who is the board admin, or reading and and figuring out who is in power, and appeal to them to try to get him help.  he will probably hate you for it, but its better then ending up like the skitzo who offed himself with a shotgun after playing EQ far too much(of course he had serious mental problems - he thought monsters were chasing him down the road IRL).

If he's lying and ditching his friends for a video game, then he's in need of your help.  Treat it like a drug addiction, because its the same thing, only no real physical side effects, other then lack of excercise.  He needs to see a psychiatrist regularly.

Of course, you have to give him prop's for being that creative, and resourcefull to be able to have everyone thinking you are actually going to school.  Someone like that could easily be using their talents and proficiency at such acts in a far more usefull way.

Get him a psychiatrist, try to kill his EQ addiction NOW.  Like ASAP.  Its going to wreak havoc on him mentally, but if you dont do it, its going to hurt him, badly.  besides, the new expansions have been crap anyway :P hell, the latest is more of a contraction then an expansion

omg that's fkd up Lee D;

when he said he went to school (being dropped of) did he sneak back in the house to play the game, or did he play the game at somebody else's place?

I hope he gets of it, good luck to you both on this, dude :)

I'll ask around to see if anybody I know plays everquest and see how they deal with it..

yeah k@mi he just snuck back in to the house and kept playing. he'd also pretend he had a class and go in his car, sit somewhere for a while, and then come back.

i play eq - msg me on aim or something if u want to know anything really, i dont have time to write anything tho cause im raiding right now lols

edit: fighting aten ha ra the most boring fight ever so ill add some stuff--------

everquest sucks. anyone who plays the game for more than 10 hours a week will tell you this.  the gameplay is terrible, graphics suck shit, sound is lame etc etc... the core "game" is terribly laid out.  people dont play for fun anymore, at least no one who plays in high end content.  most play not necessarily because they are addicted, but because they have nothing better to do with their time.

of course there's exceptions to this, which most likely your brother is.  someone who goes that far out of their way to play eq has problems (duh).  only way you can make him stop is by completely removing it from his life and forcing him to do something else.  fuck knows he wont like it, i wouldnt either (and in relation to most people i dont play eq all that much, 6 to 8 hours a day is considered casual play to a lot of people) but theres no other way you can fix it.  at least let him ebay his stuff so he can feel some sort of a sense of reward for wasting the last 3 years of his life... and hopefully he can move on...   if that fails,  a psychiatric ward is a possibility.
