Only problem is its too long to stay up for very long even when covered in ridiculous styling clay... anyone got any advice (including the obvious)?

trim it ever so slightly and just keep using styling clay/moose/gel etc. After a while your hair will stick up in a fashion and will be easier to style.

Well luckily you can just reach around and pull a different hairstyle or hat out of your ass.
